tabule restaurant
Zagat describes Tabule, a Toronto restaurant, the best:

“Superb, wonderfully fresh middle eastern eats (especially the namesake dish) purveyed by friendly, helpful people, draw crowds to this cheerful, contemporary midtowner. The tiny spot’s success has resulted in line-ups out the door, so waits are to be expected.”

Obese People Win Right to Two Seats in Planes

contact November 21st, 2008

From cheapflights:

“A Canadian court has ruled that obese people have the right to two seats on airlines.

The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by WestJet (Web site: www.westjet.com) and Air Canada on a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency that people who are obese deserve to have two seats for one fare.

Currently, the policy exists on other types of public transportation such as buses, ferries and trains.

The policy for airlines will come into effect in January 2009.”

A City Renewal Project

From jaunted:

“Canadian street artists Fauxreel and Specter have renovated an old warehouse into a dilapidated fake urban wonderland.

Called “A City Renewal Project,” it’s a secret world hidden behind a fake storefront in Toronto. Inside the seedy store is what looks like the workspace of an artist, filled with wood, construction materials and lots of Bell telephones. A back door will transport you into a long warehouse space that looks like an indoor facsimile of a real city street. Life-size black and white reproductions of closed and derelict stores line the walls of the warehouse. Further adding to the reality of the installation are real bus shelters, billboards, garbage cans–and real garbage. And of course, everything is covered in graffiti and tags.

The artists fear that the practice of tearing down old buildings and putting up brand-new condos is destroying their city’s cultural history. Even the building the show is housed in is scheduled to be knocked down to make way for new apartments. A City Renewal Project is up until November 23, at inconsistent hours, so check the website for details. “ [source]

Why Everybody Hates Toronto

why everybody hates torontoThis is the book Toronto doesn’t want you to read! Tired of Hogtown’s constant preening, pretentiousness and pomposity? This book is for you. This book is also for hard-core Toronto fans - if they have the patience to read to the end (they aren’t known for their patience). “Why Everybody Hates Toronto” is based on survey data and exhaustive research (the author tires easily). “Why Everybody Hates Toronto” is an insightful, witty, informative and wonderful look at one of the world’s great cities. Soon to be a major best-seller! Warning: Despite the book’s flippant tone and very funny overall approach, the book also contains some surprising depth and insight concerning Toronto woes. It’s a content-rich, humorous, must-read for anyone who has ever lived in, visited, or thought of Toronto. Michael B. Davie has produced a first-rate book.
